There are many ways of utilising railway sleepers for garden landscape projects, whether it’s by building raised planters for planting strawberries or using them as a retaining wall against a bank of earth or as steps down a slope.
However, they can be ideal as a material for turning into chunky, hard-wearing, solid garden furniture. Designs can be very simple. For instance, two or three sleepers laid horizontally with 2 shorter sleepers running at right angles underneath will make a very sturdy coffee table or a simple garden bench. Or substitute the 2 sleepers underneath with 4 sleepers in an upright position and you have a very solid dining table.
To make sure your furniture survives year round British weather, you would be well advised to use a suitable exterior wood preserver before leaving your creations outside to face the elements. Then, for added impact, you could also paint your new furniture in hues of pastel colours or shades of vibrant primary colours.
