South-facing garden getting too hot?

Many people think that having a property with a south-facing garden is ideal as in the summer months the garden is sunny for most of the day but for those with this aspect it can be problematic if there are no areas in the garden where there is some shade. This is especially difficult for those with young children or people who do not like to be in the sun for too long.

A long-term solution that is employed by some house owners is to plant trees as once grown they should provide adequate shady areas to sit in however this will obviously take time as the trees become established and grow tall enough to be useful in this way. Building a gazebo or pergola is another way to bring shade into a sunny garden. The siting of such structures should be carefully planned out in order for the shade to fall in the right place in the garden. Growing climbing plants such as clematis over the gazebo will make an attractive feature and help it to blend into the garden.

An awning attached to the side of the house is a solution that many people find to this issue of a south-facing garden. They can be manually operated or motorised which makes it easier to wind out when needed and can often be angled to give the much-needed shade.
