How to make a small garden feel larger

Many gardeners with a small garden are interested in ways they can make their outdoor space appear larger. Modern houses tend to have much smaller gardens than older properties, so this issue is becoming more prevalent.

The first thing to look at is the boundary of the garden. If all you can see is an expanse of wall or fence it straightaway defines the garden, so it is an idea to break it up with planting along the boundary such as a clematis or honeysuckle growing up a trellis.

Although to some gardeners it may seem counter intuitive, large pots and plants actually make a small space seem larger so go for a large palm or small tree in a large planter. In the same way large paving slabs can make the area look more spacious but stick to a couple of surfaces such as paving and gravel or decking and bark to keep it simple.

Light colours make us think of an airy space so choose lighter coloured accessories for your garden when choosing pots and furniture and choose a lighter coloured paint for fences and walls as this appears to push back the boundary rather than bring it in.
