Updating your property boundary

Most properties with a garden have a boundary of some sort between them and the next property which may be a fence, hedge or wall. If the boundary is the latter it may be difficult to change but boundaries that consist of a fence or hedge can be more easily changed.

People often choose fencing over hedging because of the hassle of pruning the hedge at regular intervals which means having to purchase a hedge trimmer or employ a gardener to prune the hedge for you. Disposing of the hedge trimmings can be a problem if you do not have a way of transporting them to a local recycling centre or do not have a kerbside collection service for garden waste. Taking out an established hedge can be a big job and it is important to think about the environmental impact of doing this as the decline in hedges is having an impact on wildlife.

Installing a fence to replace a hedge will require fence posts and panels. Concrete posts and gravel boards are best to protect the wooden fence panels from rotting. Fencing will require some maintenance such as painting or treating but this will only need doing every few years. Maintenance-free fence panels are becoming popular and although more expensive initially will save time and money in future years.
